Saxenburg Shiraz Voted Best In South Africa
An elite panel of wine industry judges selected Saxenburg Private Collection Shiraz 2003 from a record 215 entries, as the best South African Shiraz. This coveted title was awarded in July by WINE Magazine /TOPS at SPAR Shiraz Challenge.
The Saxenburg Private Collection Shiraz 2003 is described as, ?complex nose with clean, ripe fruit balanced by pepper and spice. Palate medium bodied with black fruit matched by firm, elegant tannins. Oak well manage. A long finish?.
?Home again?, smiles winemaker Nico van der Merwe. Saxenburg is frequently identified as one of South Africa?s top Shiraz producers however Saxenburg has been absent from local (South African) competitions for many years. ?This award confirms that our wines continue to be of an exceptionally high standard. Shiraz is my passion so consistency and excellence are really important to me. The eight vintages [up to 2003] working in France at Ch?teau Capion gave me an incredible feel for the nuances of Shiraz. Syrah [Shiraz] is the predominant varietal at Ch?teau Capion and of course, very important to the vintners of the Languedoc and Rhone?.
Nico confirmed the 2003 vintage marked a new strategy for Saxenburg ? reduced volumes but higher quality. Selection in the vineyard was vigorous; only the best grapes were selected for the Private Collection wines. In addition, Nico reappraised the barrel selection. He decided upon different American oak barrels from a new cooper giving more spice and a delicate vanilla flavour to the wine. He also bought more French barrels, specifically to give an improved quality to the middle palate.
Saxenburg Shiraz is presented in the new silk-screen printed French bottles incorporating the new guinea fowl logo. New packaging and award-winning wine ? can it get any better than this? Accolades, awards and medals are not new to Saxenburg, however this is the first vintage using only fruit grown on Saxenburg estate at Stellenbosch. With just over 100 hectares under vine Saxenburg has 25.5 hectares of Shiraz in production.
Saxenburg Private Collection Shiraz 2003 was released from the cellar in April. Ready for immediate drinking it will continue to improve with further bottle maturation for a further six/seven years.
