The Saxenburger Edition 17

Dear Readers,

As with every family, and here Saxenburg is no exception, one must look to the future and the new generation. At this special time of year I would like to impart to you the hymn of love and the circle of life; so beautifully expressed in our ‘Selection Famille’ wines.

Birgit and I have five children, with our eldest MANUEL (Saxenburg), pursuing his passion for wine, having recently enrolled for an apprenticeship in oenology in Germany. Our second eldest son, Vincent ADRIANUS (Chateau Capion), has also expressed great interest in working in this department, albeit in a different capacity, and is currently studying at the London School of Business.

Our three daughters FIONA (Saxenburg), who has already expressed interest in working in the wine marketing field, Stella APOLLONIA (Chateau Capion), and Raphaela GWENDOLYN (Saxenburg), are at present preparing for their matriculation at an international school in Nice, France and in due course will reveal their unique talents and interests.

Although it will take approximately 10 years before our eldest son can assume a leading role with the wine company, this creates tremendous motivation for all of us and ensures that there is continuity and growth, the basis of a real family run vineyard.

That the next generation is already expressing great interest in wine is encouraging and so it is with great optimism and confidence that we look to the future, assured of Saxenburg and Château Capion’s continued success.

Wishing you all a very joyful and peaceful festive season.

Kindest regards,

Adrian Bührer

Selection Famille

These 5 wines (Manuel, Adrianus, Fiona, Gwendolyn & Apollonia) celebrate the precious gift of each life and their own unique and individual diversity therein. This is depicted in a story which appears on each bottle.

For example: Apollonia Château Capion (Viognier / Chardonnay & Rousanne)

Selection famille celebrates the precious gift of life. As individual as you, the wines each have unique characteristics. Apollonia is a vibrant blend of chardonnay, viognier and rousanne, a dry style, full of citrus flavours with overtones of apricot and almonds enhanced with a hint of vanilla oak.

New Releases

Private Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2002 – available from Oct 2002
A beautifully cool, racy Sauvignon Blanc brimming with classic tropical ripeness, hints of grapefruit and floral fragrances, supported by a wonderful zesty intensity of flavours. A cool harvest at the time of ripeness ensured a wine of lovely finesse and elegance, but with good acidity and structure to mature and develop for another two or three years.

Private Collection Chardonnay 2001 – available from Dec 2002 / Jan 2003
Fine citrus and subtle butterscotch aromas introduce this elegant Burgundian style chardonnay. Complex flavours of apple and pear fuse together on a background of well integrated French oak and a long penetrating finish.

The Guinea Fowl Restaurant

One of the most exciting activities at Saxenburg is the growth and transformation of the Guinea Fowl Restaurant. Under the guiding hand of Executive Chef, Leo Rohmer (previously le Chalet in Pinelands and Mowbray), visitors to Saxenburg have been treated to some of the finest cuisine available in the Peninsula - fish and venison being some of Leo’s specialities. To complement your culinary experience the Restaurant stocks an unmatched selection of our vintage wines. These include Saxenburg Shiraz Select 98, Private Collection Cabernet 94, Private Collection Merlot 97, to mention a few. The menu is varied, contains many old favourites and caters for every taste and preference.

Looking for a venue?

The Guinea Fowl restaurant provides an ideal venue for Corporate functions, small weddings and specialized functions. Seating up to 90 in comfortable dining style and able to cater for almost any requirement, this venue may be just what you are looking for to ensure the success of that relaxed wedding, office party or function. Outdoor functions can also be arranged on the Estate.

Please contact Leo Rohmer Tel 906 5232 or E-mail guineaf@mweb.co.za to attend to your requirements.

More Than Just Wine

An outstanding Extra Virgin cold pressed Olive Oil produced from 60year old orchards on Saxenburg is now available on the farm. This “boutique” quality product is a logical extension of the excellent wines of the Estate.
“The olive tree is surely the richest gift of heaven” Thomas Jefferson.

Spring Dinner

It was one of those warm, balmy, windfree evenings so typical of the Cape in early Spring.

Gathered on the rolling lawns at the Lapa were approximately 80 guests who had come to enjoy an evening hosted by Saxenburg.

Guests were representatives from some of the leading Restaurants in the Peninsula who enjoyed succulent spit roast lamb and needless to say, a wonderful selection of Saxenburg wines. This function, was voted by many as one of the most enjoyable evenings of relaxed networking they had ever attended.

Distribution Partners Announced

Fresh impetus has been given to the marketing of Saxenburg and Château Capion wines through the recent appointment of three new distribution partners:

The Really Great Branding Company (referred to as RGBC) has been appointed to market the Saxenburg range throughout South Africa, while Château Capion, the sister Estate from Montpellier, Lanquedoc, France is in the capable hands of “Terroir” in Gauteng and Siris Vintners in the Western Cape. We look forward to exciting results in the years ahead.

Relax & Unwind

The long, relaxed summer days are now catered for with the addition of The Lapa at Saxenburg, catering for lighter meals set in the magnificent gardens of the farm amidst a panoramic view of the Peninsula.

VIP Dinners

For the last 18 months Saxenburg has hosted regular Candlelight dinners for selected guests. Over this period the wines of Saxenburg, Château Capion and outstanding food of the Guinea Fowl Restaurant have been introduced to guests who have included Ambassadors, Consuls, Chairmen and Chief Executives of major companies, as well as prominent community leaders.

These events have been part of an outreach and awareness programme to introduce stakeholders to the farm and its philosophy.
