The Guinea Fowl Restaurant
 

The Guinea Fowl Restaurant is situated on one of the oldest wines farm in South Africa - Saxenburg. It is situated approximately 15 minutes from Cape Town International Airport and 30 minutes from Cape Town City Centre. (View map on the "Contact Us" page.) The proximity of the Guinea Fowl Restaurant to the busy metropolis makes it a perfect haven for leisurely lunches, intimate dinners, weddings and business conferences.

 


The Restaurant, originally part of what was formerly the old wine cellar, was opened by owners Adrian and Birgit Bührer in 1991. They both believe that good food and wine go hand in hand. Birgit was the chef and Adrian was in charge of wine service and front of house.

Our menu specializes in fresh seafood, game and a variety of guinea fowl dishes rarely found elsewhere. The extensive menu offers light lunches to full a la carte dining. The Wine List is exclusively Saxenburg. Older vintages are maturing in our Cellar, waiting to be opened for that special occasion. Some of the Saxenburg wines are exclusive to the Restaurant and Tasting Room.

The ambience is cosy and warm, with the vine-covered terrace giving a real Mediterranean feel to the restaurant. Breath taking views of the Peninsula and glorious sun sets over Table Mountain contributes to an unforgettable dining experience. In the summer, this is a popular location for al fresco dining. During the winter months guests gather around our glowing fireplace, sipping away at a glass of Saxenburg Wine.

Saxenburg has always been a popular venue for weddings, family reunions and corporate functions, such as year-end celebrations. Our lapa makes a perfect setting for braais, spit braais and sundowners.

Our resident miniature horse, Achilles is on hand every lunch to treat children to a ride around the gardens. Our Koi pond provides a point of great interest to the little people too.

Leo was born in Marktoberdorf, Allgau, Germany. He served a 3-year apprenticeship as chef at Hotel Sepp in Marktoberdorf and at chef school in Bad Wörishofen, from 1974 – 1977.

He then served in the German Navy at Iland Borkum for 1½ years, following which he gained extensive experience working in several restaurants and hotels in Germany and Switzerland.

In 1983 Leo came to South Africa and worked in the Le Chalet Restaurant in Pinelands. A year later he bought 1/3 of the shares and in 1989 he became the sole owner.

In 1994 he opened the first Rösti-bar in South Africa. Since October 2000 he is serving as Executive Chef and manager at The Guinea Fowl Restaurant.

In June 2005 he was inducted as a member of the Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. He is recognised locally as the only chef to win the coveted trophy at the Salon Culinaire.
